Organisation summary: The National Science Centre (NCN) is a government executive agency set up to fund basic research. Basic research is original experimental or theoretical research work undertaken primarily to acquire new knowledge of the underlying foundations of phenomena and observable facts, without any direct practical application or use. The NCN was established by the Act on the National Science Centre, which came into force on 1 October 2010. The Minister of Science and Higher Education supervises the activities of the NCN. Minister of Science and Higher Education Barbara Kudrycka officially opened the NCN on 4 March 2011. That same month, the National Science Centre announced first calls for proposals within basic research.
